HSE warns vehicle body-shop workers about asthma risks

The HSE is encouraging body-shop workers to do more to protect themselves after new research suggests that many are putting themselves at risk of developing occupational asthma.

A report by the HSE identified that vehicle spray painters are 80 times more likely to develop occupational asthma than the average worker in the UK because they fail to take the correct precautions.

Lorry driver left brain-damaged by falling load

A delivery driver suffered brain damage when a panel saw fell and struck him in the head as he was unloading it from a lorry.

On 16 August 2007, Nicholas Holmes, 49, was delivering panel saws from Joda Freight Ltd’s depot in West Yorkshire to the Saw Centre in Glasgow. He had not loaded the vehicle himself and was not given any information about how the saws were secured inside the lorry.

MoD failed to monitor soldier’s PTSD symptoms

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has agreed to pay part of a six-figure sum to a former bomb-disposal expert suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). 
 


The soldier, who does not wish to be named for security reasons, joined the Army in 1984 and served in the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, the Gulf War, Bosnia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. He carried out bomb-disposal duties and dealt with the aftermath of terrorist incidents.

Accreditation scheme should help “restore confidence”

The new accreditation scheme for safety consultants will be officially announced in the next few weeks by the HSE, which will run it in the initial stages.

The scheme will be open to UK consultants only, so in-house health and safety managers, advisors, etc. and consultants based abroad will not be eligible to register. There will be an annual fee to join, though this will be to cover administrative costs only, and so is unlikely to be prohibitive. The register will also initially be open only to those providing safety, rather than health-related advice.
